Conversation with an Industry Expert

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with a peer of mine, a professional software engineer in the industry, and discuss his career, motivations, and perspective on the rapidly evolving tech industry. His insights provided a much clearer picture of both the challenges and opportunities that come with being a software engineer in today's world. Before I continue, I would like to note that he did prefer to remain mostly anonymous; however, his name is Miguel, and he is a practicing software engineer in California with many years of experience.

The reason I chose to interview him specifically is that he landed in software engineering sort of by "accident". His post-high-school education isn't in computer science; his degree is actually in physics. This is important because, through his work while studying physics, he came to write a lot of software. He was able to build a physics simulation using software while in school, and that is how he ended up migrating into software after graduating.

When I asked him why he became a software engineer, he was very blunt and honest. He said it was a mix of financial motivation and the love of problem-solving. The problem-solving part isn't shocking; he did study physics after all. "It is a job where you can think critically and get paid well for it," he says. For him, it is not just the paycheck; it's the satisfaction of taking a complex problem, breaking it down, and finding a solution that works. He kind of made me understand that part of the appeal is that no two problems are exactly the same.

When it came to advice for people entering the field, he emphasized mastering the fundamentals. He specified that math is very important; math is basically what it all comes down to. Of course, the further obvious ones were data structures, algorithms, and the ability to think critically, logically, and learn how to problem solve was the advice. We also spoke about non-technical skills. He emphasized that the most important soft skill is persuasion, the ability to articulate and defend your ideas to convince managers or other personnel that your way is the way to go. In his words, " you need to learn to convince people your ideas are good". In other words, being able to write code is one thing, but being able to explain your ideas and collaborate is just as crucial.

Another thing we spoke about is the constant change in the landscape of the software engineering world. "How do you keep up when it is constantly changing?" I asked. His approach seems very simple; he prioritizes his job tasks, getting them done as swiftly and efficiently as he can, then uses any extra time to explore new languages, frameworks, or tools. He tries to make at least one day available to learning new skills or expanding on his already existing ones. This slow and steady approach really helps expand his skillset and prevent burnout.

When I asked about industry trends, AI was top of mind(mostly because that is what I asked him about). He sees it as a powerful productivity tool that could make software development faster and more efficient, but he’s realistic about its impact. “This is the first downturn in 20 years, and the previous growth was unusual,” he explained. He doesn’t think there’s reason to panic; AI could create new types of jobs and change workflows, but it’s not necessarily a threat. For him, it’s more about adapting and using AI to enhance human skills rather than replace them.

Overall, talking to him gave me a much clearer picture of what it’s like to be a software engineer today. It’s a career that blends creativity, problem-solving, continuous learning, and communication. His advice about focusing on fundamentals, developing soft skills, and staying curious is practical for anyone interested in tech. Above all, his perspective showed that, despite the rapid changes and occasional uncertainty, software engineering is still a field full of opportunity, growth, and rewarding challenges. The interview provided a nuanced view of software engineering as a profession that truly combines creativity and technical expertise.

Reflection

This conversation gave me insight from a perspective I hadn’t really considered before. He does hail from a traditional computer science education, but his passion for problem-solving and creativity has carried him far in software engineering. That really stood out to me, because I’ve often thought the most successful people in tech are those with a comp-sci degree. Hearing his story showed me that curiosity, persistence, and a love for solving problems can be just as valuable as formal training.

I also came away with a new respect for the industry as a whole. The way he described software engineering wasn’t just about coding—it was about thinking differently, approaching challenges creatively, and making an impact through technology. That perspective made me appreciate how much depth and artistry there is in the field.

Our conversation also helped alleviate some of my stress around AI. Instead of seeing it as a threat, he framed it as a productivity tool that can actually expand opportunities. Finally, his advice on staying current—focusing on core work first, then dedicating time to learning steadily—made the idea of keeping up in a fast-moving industry feel far less overwhelming.

Future Steps

Going forward, I can apply what I learned from this interview in several meaningful ways. First, I want to focus more on strengthening my fundamentals—especially in areas like data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving—because those skills form the foundation of everything in software engineering. I also plan to work on my communication and persuasion skills, since being able to clearly explain and advocate for my ideas is just as important as writing good code.

His approach to continuous learning also gave me a strategy I can follow. Instead of trying to learn everything at once, I’ll prioritize my main tasks and then use my free time to explore new languages, tools, and techniques at a steady pace. This will help me stay adaptable without feeling overwhelmed.

Finally, his perspective on AI helped shift my mindset. Rather than seeing it as a threat, I’ll look for ways to use it as a tool to improve my productivity and creativity. Overall, I feel more confident and prepared to grow in this field
